Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which wood should I choose for my cellar racks?

A: Pine is an excellent choice for economical storage, however it does not have the moisture and temperature
tolerance of Cedar and Mahogany and is not ideal for basement storage or temperature controlled wine cellars.
Cedar is a light red/brown color and is light yet durable, in addition to being economically priced. Our premium
wine racks are made of Mahogany, which is a hard wood and weighs twice as much as the cedar or pine. The
Mahogany is a darker red/brown with a tight grain that has a very smooth finish and is extremely durable.

Q: What's the difference between Redwood and Cedar?

A: We use high quality Western Red Cedar as a very economical alternative to redwood. A consistent quality of
Redwood has become increasingly more difficult and expensive to find. Western Red Cedar is non-aromatic and
has no odor that can penetrate your cork and cause odd flavors in your wine, it is not the kind of cedar typically
used in closet linings, etc. The cedar is very moisture and temperature tolerant, resists rot and pests and does
not require a finish to keep its nice color. We do have redwood available for custom racks.

Q: Why do I need a wine cellar?

A: A wine cellar will properly secure your wine bottles.

Q: What is the right way to store wine? (Whites & Reds & Champs)

A: Maintaining the correct environment is essential if you are going to store your wines for an extended period of
time. The desirable environment is a temperature range of 55-58° F and between 55% to 75% humidity. To
maintain this environment you must isolate your cellar from any conditions that would compromise these
desired ranges. This is accomplished with the use of vapor barriers and insulation

Q: What is a cooling unit and how is it different from an air conditioning unit?

A: In the process of cooling a room, air-conditioners and refrigerator dries out the air. They are not designed to
perform properly in the 55-58° F and 55% to 75% humidity range. Because of this, it is necessary to buy
refrigeration units designed specifically for wine cellars if you want to maintain the proper environment.

Q: What kind of steel is found in Tool Logic products?

A: Tool Logic typically uses a Medium Carbon Stainless Steel called 420J2.

Q:
Why do you use this type of steel?

A: Steel is made primarily of iron and carbon. Most modern steels also contain several additional elements such as
chromium, molybdenum etc. By changing the ratio of the carbon and these various additives the steel can be
given different properties. For instance a larger chromium content will increase the “stainless” quality of the
material. However it will make the steel less able to take and hold an edge. In contrast, adding more carbon will
allow the steel to become harder and better able to take and hold an edge, but it will rust more easily. 420J2
steel offers a good balance between edge holding and resistance to rust.

Q: What is the Rockwell Hardness of the blades?

A: When steel is heat treated it achieves a certain hardness. The recommended hardness varies with the carbon
content of the steel. The harder the steel, the longer lasting the edge, however the trade-off is it's more difficult
to resharpen. hardness is measured on the Rockwell Scale (higher numbers are harder). The hardness range for
420J2 steel is about RC50. It offers a blade that can take a sharp edge yet is reasonably easy to resharpen if it
    becomes dull.

Q: What is Zytel®?

A
: Zytel®? is a material made by DuPont. It is nylon reinforced with glass fiber (typically 33% glass fiber). It's a
very tough and stable composite that is unaffected by most solvents or even gasoline.

Q: Where are Tool Logic products made?

A
: The majority of our products are made in SEKI, Japan. Seki is a small town high in the mountains above Nagoya
in Gifu prefecture. It is the traditional center of knife and sword making in Japan and is still home to some of
the finest makers in the world. During the past ten years tremendous changes have taken place in the cutlery
and small tools market. First, Taiwan became a dominant force in folding knives and multi-tools by offering
high quality at very affordable prices. The Wine Companion, Office Companion, Golf Cards and Notecard are
made by top factories in Taiwan. Today it is difficult to go to a store and not find something "Made in China".
Like Japanese and Taiwanese makers before them, the better Chinese cutlery and tool factories are rapidly
gaining knowledge of quality production methods. The new TracLite is our first product made in China.
